P.J. Smith Fine Art
Original oil paintings from Montana
P.J.’s love for the arts started at an early age. His father, PhillipSr. a master potter and art professor, always encouraged and nurtured P.J.’s creative talent. P.J. grew up fishing, hunting and skiing in Wyoming. These interests have influenced P.J.’s main genres including rivers, landscapes and the creatures that inhabit the outdoors.
P.J. began his formal art training at Casper College and graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Montana State University, Bozeman. Currently, P.J. is a professional artist working from his studio inBillings Montana. Following in the tradition of the impressionistic artist. A plein air painter. He paints outside and on location to study the true light and colors of the outdoors. He then uses these paintings to create larger pieces in his studio. His impressionistic style is accomplished with a pallet knife. By using thick paint, he is able to create a unique piece that has composition, hue, value, temperature, texture and edge. It is the emphasis on edge and texture that is the soul of the painting and captures the subject’s beauty and roughness. He believes both the beauty and harshness of nature are reflected in his style.
